The First Pickleball Teams Cup: A New Era in Spanish Pickleball
The Team Cup in Barcelona introduced a fresh team-based format to Spain’s pickleball scene. A total of 8 teams competed, representing various cities, with the goal of promoting a team spirit and community among players who typically participate in singles.
On a side note, I’ve noticed that singles is the go to for players outside of the United States. The reason is often because of the faster, exciting pace. However, the TeamCup showed that pairing up is even more entertaining.
The Results
The event followed a group stage format, after which the top 4 teams proceeded to the semi finals. Shooter Padel and Hospi Winds outclassed their opponents to setup a tantalizing final. However, it was team Hospi Winds from Hospital de l’Infant (Tarragona) that emerged victorious in the big duel.
Talented Spanish Pickleball Players
Despite being dwarfed in participation by tennis and padel on the Iberian peninsula, there are talented pickleball players. Two of them competed in the Barcelona TeamCup. Enric Casanovas, a veteran player over 60 showed that seniors are a dominant force in the sport.
On the opposite end of the court was a youthful rising star by the name of Lukas Tomás. At just 13 years old, he was educating adults on the art of shot selection throughout the event..
Challenges and Triumphs: Organizing a Groundbreaking Event
There is never smooth sailing in a successful tournament. It tests your character and problem solving skills.
One of the biggest hurdles was finding sponsors, as pickleball is still relatively unknown in Spain compared to tennis or padel.
Another challenge was ensuring enough players to form competitive teams. Despite these obstacles, event organizers Karlos and Iker Tomas succeeded in creating an engaging tournament at the Can Via Racket Club.
Modest But Positive Crowd
The local community’s response was modest, as expected. However, those in attendance responded positively to the event and highlighted the growing interest in Barcelona pickleball participation.
